If you are currently registered to vote, you do not need to re-register unless you have made a change to your name or address, in which case you need to notify the Registrar in writing.
Registration Requirements
To be eligible to register to vote in Virginia, you must:
- Be a United States citizen
- Be a resident of Virginia (a person who has come to Virginia for temporary purposes and intends to return to another state is not considered a resident for voting purposes)

- Not be registered and plan to vote in another state

Deadlines
The voter registration deadlines for elections are:
General Elections, 22 days prior
Primary Elections, 22 days prior
Special Elections, 14 days prior
Special Elections called by Governor, 7 days prior
Virginia now also allows for same day voter registration. If you fail to register by the deadline, you may complete a registration application and vote a provisional ballot. Provisional ballots provide a way for you to vote until your registration eligibility can be confirmed. The local Electoral Board will determine your eligibility and if your ballot can be counted.
