Landfill Operator

Position Summary
 Title: Landfill Operator
 Department: Solid Waste
 Reports To: Solid Waste Facility Manager
 Location: 1060 Recycle Rd Bedford, VA 24523
 Hours: 7:30am - 4:00pm required to work every other weekend
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Performs difficult skilled work to support the operations of the landfill, transfer station and recycle building, operates a variety of equipment.
  • Does related work as required.
  • This position works mostly at the Waste Management Facility and is required to be outside in all weather conditions and includes working during  snow removal activities.
  • Facility personnel work most holidays and on weekends under a rotating schedule.
  • Work is performed under regular supervision.
  • Supervision is exercised over solid waste operations in the absence of the Solid Waste Facilities Manager. 
Qualifications:

Education/Experience:

  • Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school.
  • Considerable experience in solid waste heavy equipment operations.
  • Ability to operate a variety of equipment, safe operating practices, and occupational hazards.
  • Must be highly organized with ability to multi-task supporting equipment and ground operations
  • Must be able to handle a high volume of work and varying assignments with accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Introductory computer knowledge and clerical skills.
  • Ability to read, write, and understand and specific oral instructions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the public.
  • Ability to work in extreme environmental conditions.
  • Must possess a valid Commonwealth of Virginia driver's license with acceptable driving record.
  • Completion of a physical examination indicating acceptable health to perform the essential duties of position.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • General knowledge of solid waste disposal regulations or knowledge in a related field.

Certifications/Licenses:

  • Must possess a valid Commonwealth of Virginia driver’s license.
  • Proof of insurance required to drive on County business, and acceptable driving record. 
  • Class I Operator’s license, or ability to obtain within two years of accepting position.

  • The physical requirements described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

  • This is heavy work requiring exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
  • Work requires climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping and repetitive motions.
